3 Things That You Shouldn't Do When You're Being Sexually Harassed At Work

Blog

Being sexually harassed is never a good feeling -- it can bring on feelings of anger, embarrassment, fear and more. It can be difficult to know how to act in this type of situation, but there are a few things that you should avoid doing. Even though sexual harassment is never the victim's fault, avoiding certain things can help you avoid getting put in an even worse situation.

1. Laugh it Off

Sometimes, it can seem easy to laugh off an inappropriate joke. However, in many cases, this can only make the behavior worse. It is generally best to avoid laughing or joking around with your harasser about the behavior, even if you don't want to seem as if you are making a "big deal" about it. Laughing could be perceived as "flirtatious" behavior, or it could be seen that you aren't all that bothered by the behavior.

2. Allow Yourself to Be Stuck Alone with the Harasser

If your harasser attempts to corner you in an empty office or other area where you are alone, it is best to try your best to get out of the situation. Try to stay in more public areas of the office whenever possible, or ask someone to accompany you if you will otherwise be alone with your harasser. If you cannot avoid being in this type of situation, make sure that you have your phone close at hand so that you can call for help if something happens. Even someone who has "only" made comments so far could mean harm to you, so it's best to protect yourself whenever possible.

3. Ignore the Situation

So many people who are harassed at work end up trying to ignore the situation. Some are worried that they will lose their jobs, while others don't want to come across as "prudes." Some people are embarrassed about the situation or somehow feel that it is their fault, and others think that nothing will be done about it anyway. You should never, ever have to put up with sexual harassment, however, so you should not ignore the situation. Instead, work with a sexual harassment attorney to see if he or she can help you with your situation.

As you can see there are a few things that you should not do if you are being sexually harassed at work. If you need more advice about handling the situation, contact sexual harassment lawyers right away to find out about your options.
